Option解説
client programのoption設定を逐次解説します。一括変更をせずに多少設定を変えるだけで、描画品質と描画速度を適度に調整することが可能です。
optionの解説を始めました。ぼちぼち追加して参ります。
optionが多いのは良いことですが、何から手を付けて良いのか解らない(という方への簡単設定もあるにはあるのですが、往々にしてそれでは痒いところに手が届かなくて困ることが多い)方の為と、自身の備忘録を兼ねています。light is right!

performance, quality, userbilityは、独断と偏見により、各設定の効用を数値化しています。それぞれ、重さと軽さへの作用・醜さと美しさへの作用・不便さと便利さへの作用で、0を基準にして正負50点までの値としています。また、幅はすなわち当該設定でいじれる幅を示します。例えばqualityが0 to 50の場合、最低設定では通常と変わらず、最高設定では美しさに多大に貢献するなど。また、例えばperformanceが0固定の場合、当該設定をいくらいじっても重くなったり軽くなることがない、ということを示しています。これにより、「performanceを犠牲にしない程度にqualityを上げたい」「ともかく一番軽くしたい」などの目的にあわせて設定を変更する目安を提供しています。
基本的な説明
performanceは平たく言えば「軽いけど汚い」、逆にqualityは「重いけど綺麗」を表しています。

ここで選んだ7つの基準によって、それらの設定を一括して変更することが出来ます。多くの設定を一つ一ついじるのが面倒な方に特にお勧めです。Extreme Qualityが一番綺麗で、次第に描画等が荒くなる代わりに速度を稼げるようになっています。また、お好みで調整をする場合(何か一つでもこの設定以外の場所で変えるとCustumになります)でも、ここで大まかに決めてから細部をいじるようにすれば、調整は「さじ加減」のみで済むでしょう。ただし、Extreme Performanceにしても各種設定が最軽量にならないあたり、「世界で最も汚いscreen shotを赦さない」とでも言いたげなdevの魂胆が透けて見えます。[2004/10/19]

物体(object)を画面に描画する際に、camera(自分)からどの程度離れた距離までのものを描画するかを設定します。単位はfeet(gameのlocと同じ)です。遠くの物を描画しようとすると、それだけ描画する対象が増えることになるので重くなります。しかし屋外では遠くが見えると何かと便利です。遠くのlandmarkがあればそれを目印に出来ます。逆に近くしか見えないと、走っていたらmobの溜まり場に突っ込んでいた、ということが起こりえます。屋内では遠くが見えても仕方がない上に、そもそも遠くが見えないことの方が多いため、あまり意味がありません。美しさにはあまり作用しません。その気になれば、遠くを描画せずとも、遠くを霞ませてごまかせます。屋外では或る程度高めに、屋内では思い切って最低にしてしまうのも良いでしょう。[2004/10/19]

EQに限らず、3Dのgameの多くは、3D modelの造形にtextureという物を貼り付けてcharacterを表現しています。粘土細工に目鼻口を印刷した紙を貼り付けるようなものです。このtextureを貼り付けるcharacterの数を設定します。0だと周り中はおろか自分さえも粘土細工になってしまいます。NetHackや初期Wizardlyに慣れた方なら、想像(妄想?)を逞しくさせて脳内で補完することが出来るでしょう。しかし、見た目は何とも寂しいものになってしまいます。さらに、character creationでも言われていたように、細部はいじれても広い範囲(例えば姿勢の良さ悪さ、大胸筋の付き具合、腕や脚の長さがいじれない)や全体(せいぜい全体的な大きさ程度)はほとんどいじれないなど、粘土細工が変化に乏しい(ここはEQ2の弱点の一つだと思いますので、今後に期待します)ので、誰が誰だか解らなくなる可能性もあります。装備品や名前で判断するしかなくなってしまいます。1つ2つくらいでは劇的には遅くならないため、それなりの数は設定して置いた方が良いでしょう。textureそのものの美しさについては「Character Texture Resolution」で設定します。[2004/10/19]

こちらは、一度に表示するcharacterの数を設定します。ここで決めた数以上のcharacterが「見える」場合、超過した分については描画が省略されます。例えば10人と設定したときに30人の集団と出会えば、20人は省略され、10人しか画面には映らないことになります。しかし、欲張ってあまり多くの数を設定すると、描画の機会が増えるため重くなります。大人数といえばraidが思い浮かばれますが、素直に数を大きくすると重くなるので、raidでもあまり大人数は描画しないことが大勢となるでしょう。[2004/10/19]

戦闘を開始した場合、characterを自動的にtargetの方角へ向かせるかどうかを設定します。targetさえ取れば向きを逐一勝手に変えてくれるので、特に前衛にとっては嬉しい機能でしょう。EQ1ではmobの移動に合わせて逐一向きを変える必要がありましたが、その手間は大幅に減ります。ただし、mobに正対するように方向転換をするため、微妙な位置調整が必要な場合は手動で行う方が良いでしょう。例えば、正面から殴ったのではmobが向かって真後ろにknockbackされるため、mobを向かって右後方へわざとknockbackさせるために、敢えて左前方から殴るなど。後衛にとっては可もなく不可もなしです。逃走する場合、戦闘を止めないと相手を向いたままになるため、いつまで経っても逃げられないという罠にもなり得ます。[2004/10/19]

mouseの移動(drag)でcharacterの向きを変えることをmouse lookと呼称します。このmouse lookで向きを変える感度を設定します。例えば或る一定の角度に向きを変える場合、この設定を低くするとmouseの移動量が増え、逆に設定を高くするとわずかなmouseの移動で向きを変えることが出来ます。車の運転に例える場合、handleの感度に相当します。お勧めは高めです。慌てていると向きを変えすぎてしまって行き過ぎることがありますが、頻繁な操作である移動を楽にするためには、労力は少ない方がありがたいからです。ただし、他の設定によりperformanceが低くなっている場合、コマ落ちしている間にも方向転換が有効であることによって、意図せずに方向を変え過ぎてしまうこともあるでしょう。[2004/10/19]

mouseのprimary button(左利きなら左button)でobject(扉や人物や宝箱等)に行動を起こす(話す、戦う、開ける等)場合に、どのような押し方をするかを選びます。標準ではdouble clickですが、お勧めはsingle click except attackです。扉を開けたり、人と話したりする度に二回もカチカチと押すのは大変です。しかし一方で、慎重な判断が必要な戦闘は誤操作を防止するという考え方です。[2004/10/21]

「Mouse Look Sensitivity」のkey版。ただしmouseと違うところは、keyによる方向転換の特徴にあります。mouseは「移動量」という空間的な可変値を持ちますが、keyは「押した/押していない」の2つの値しかありません。したがって、「移動量」の代わりに「押下時間」という時間的な可変値を持たせることになります。この設定は、或る一定の方向転換に要するkeyの押下時間の量を指定します。感度を低くすれば長く押さなければならず、高くすれば短い押下時間で向きを変えられます。お勧めはやはり高い感度ですが、mouseと違ってusabilityに資する幅はそれほど大きくはありません。[2004/10/19]
